Is it possible to strip the DRM / Copy-protection from songs purchased from the iTunes store with the latest iTunes (version 7.6 ?)
There is an old method that still works, which is to burn your purchased tracks to an MP3 CD using iTunes, then re-import that same CD back onto the computer. The problems with this are that it takes a lot of time and effort to do a large number of songs, and the resulting songs are of slightly decreased quality.
There is also another lossy method… See this lifehacker article:
Strip DRM from your iTunes purchases with DoubleTwist
For audiophiles among us, this simply isn’t an option!
You can achieve this on iTunes 7.5.x using QTFairUse6, as seen here. [Make sure you are not breaking any local laws before proceeding with this method. ]
Mac user? There’s a method that works described on the mac version of the site. Read the “DRM” tag there…
So readers, do you know a way to liberate my purchased songs? Let us know in the comments..!

Yes. Two options for Win users, both of which work flawlessly on my Vista Ultimate (32 bit) machine. Freebie MyFairTunes has been updated accordingly. Also, shareware Protected Music Converter: http://www.wma-mp3.com/ . I purchased it several months ago, and have found it’s upgraded promptly as necessary to keep up with new versions of iTunes. Cost is now $20, but with its drag & drop interface and multiple options, plus super-ease of use, it’s an absolute gem. No affiliation; just one happy customer. This is one of those odd times when I actually prefer a $$ app over the freebie.
I’m sorry; I forgot to add that as regards MyfairTunes, you need to add a section to the end of its xml file. Directions here: http://www.hymn-project.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1555
On the link you gave, it says “Latest supported iTunes version: 7.5.0″. Can anyone else vouch for this working on iTunes 7.6? And what do i add to the xml?
Articles for those two plugins are now in the pipeline. Thanks for your help…
When you get to that linked page at Hymn-Project, scroll to the bottom. You’ll see the text of the “patch.xml” file, which lives in the MyFairTunes directory post-installation. Open up that xml file in NotePad or whatever; copy and paste the section regarding the most recent iTunes update version number. Hard to explain, but it all makes immediate sense once you have that linked page open, next to your patch.xml file.
I downloaded the latest version of myfairtunes and added the patch described above, but it’s still not working. Is anyone else having problems? Any suggestions?
As that site has now been updated - “the offsets for 7.6.x below DO NOT WORK. They are for educational purposes ONLY”. Not entirely sure why they’re up there, but it sounds like we still don’t have a working solution..?
can we get a confirmation that http://www.wma-mp3.com works without a loss of quality? I am very very desperate the convert music from itunes 7.6 but don’t want to purchase something if the quality of my files is lowered.
I’ve had no complaints. The end quality is up to the user, via the options section. You set 192, 256 etc, as well as VBR and the like. Despite the fact that DRM’d files are, by definition, of lesser quality than non-DRM’d files, I’m quite happy with the results. (Dunno the technical terms, but my ears are picky!) I also love just being able to drag outta iTunes and into PMC (Protected Music Converter), set the output directory, then just drag the finished product back into iTunes.
hatedrm - the article has been updated with what seems like a free alternative to WMA-MP3.com.

I use iTunes on Windows. When I was using iTunes 6, I used a program called QTFairUse6 to remove the iTunes DRM. However, it doesn’t work with iTunes 7. To get around this, I uninstall iTunes 7 and reinstall version 6 just long enough to run the program on any new tracks I buy. Then I reinstall iTunes 7 and Bob’s your uncle. DRM-free with no apparent quality loss… m4p becomes m4a. It’s a bit of a kludge but it works.
QTFairUse6 and MyFairTunes7 both have the ABILITY to crack 7.6.1.9’s DRM. The problem is, the Developers have been ordered to cease and desist. We have to take it into our own hands and make a new QTFairUse6 config file or a MyFairTunes7 patch.xml showing the offsets and such into iTunes. The problem is: Who is willing that can actually do it?
Was wondering what the required text is in the xml file as just changing the version doesnt work, someone that has the xml code want to paste it here would be great.
Burn your DRM songs to cd. Rip back in to iTunes with it set to rip as mp3. Problem solved.
Using Tunebite, you can remove drm from itunes music and video - legally. Guide at here

If you want to maintain the same quality of the drm file then burn to audio file in Itunes then use another ripper (dbpoweram, mediamonkey etc.. and rip to Flac. It’s lossless and you won’t be transcoding and the output will be the same as the input less drm. As to Audiophiles I doubt they would be using Itunes DRM music @ 128kbps.
if you have a mac. drag the songs to the desktop. delete them from itunes. highlight the song. click get info. change the file extension from .m4p to .m4a. then double click the song and it will import into itunes. you dont need any kind of program.
Remove your DRM off of iTunes easier by using this method,
