Give your iPod a good looking icon so it looks great in Windows Explorer!
In your iPod’s root directory, create a new file called “AUTORUN.INF” and in it type this:
========
[AUTORUN]
ICON=icon.ico
========
Then find an iPod icon that looks like your Standard iPod, iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano or even your Christmas themed iPod!
Download the Windows icon pack and extract the .ico files. Rename the one you’re using to icon.ico, put it in your iPod’s root, and for neatness give it the attribute “hidden”.
Now eject your iPod and reattach it. (You may need to restart your computer at this stage.)
Plug it in anywhere and it’ll look much better in ‘My Computer’ and any autorun screens because you’ll see the nice icon.
You can combine the autorun file in this tutorials with others from this site to get even more happening when you plug in your iPod!
If you know how to get AutoRun working on a Mac, let us know in the comments!

Does it work on the iPhone/iPod touch?
I’m asking it because it has no hard drive mode support (I know files can be added with iPhoneBrowser), thus it won’t be displayed on Windows Explorer.
Hi SomeGuy,
A similar question is asked on the GetCals article. As far as i know, there’s no free solution, although software called TouchCopy will effectively enable disk use on your iPod Touch. Perhaps check the other post and see if there’s a better solution by now…
Sorry i couldn’t be more help!
I followed the instructions and the iPod icon showed up as soon as I re-attached it to my computer. But a day later, I plugged it in again and the icon went back to the default. The autorun.inf file was still on the iPod and so was the new icon. Somehow it didnt “stick”. Any thoughts?
This is wicked! Thanks so much, I had no idea you could do this kind of thing, but it got me thinking too. Would it be possible to use AutoRun for other Removable Disk drives?
is all i get is the no icon available image
