Synchronise Google Calendar to your iPod. This walkthrough will allow your iPod to automatically sync your GCal whenever it is plugged into a computer.

Note: Your iPod must be a recent enough version to support calendars.

Download getCals.zip and extract it. Open getCals.ini and replace the text there with this:

========
location|..\Calendars\

calendar|GCal|###
========

Except replace “###” with the ICAL address for the calendar you’d like to sync. [How do i find this?]

Notice how i’ve used “..” instead of a drive letter - this way it will work on any (windows) computer, no matter what drive letter the iPod is assigned.

From the extracted archive, copy both getCals.exe and the modified getCals.ini to the root directory of your iPod. For aesthetics, you may wish to make the settings file hidden.

Now create another (optionally hidden) file called AUTORUN.INF which contains this:

========
[autorun]
open=getCals.exe
========

Now eject your iPod and next time you plug it in, it will automatically run getCals.exe and your calendar will be synchronised. You can even synchronize multiple calendars by duplicating the “calendar|…” line and changing the calendar URL.

Plug your iPod in and it’ll automatically run getCals, as long as AutoRun is enabled on the computer. If not, you can manually doubleclick on getCals and it’ll perform a manual sync.

    Hi there. I don’t think this works with the iPod Touch because you can’t use that as a hard drive. In other words, the option to enable it’s use as a hard drive isn’t there in iTunes.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi Dan,

    You’re right - this will not work with the iPhone or iPod touch for that precise reason. I’m sorry to say that i don’t think there’s an easy (free) way to enable disk use, however, there is a program called TouchCopy which does it for $20. [It is discussed here].

    Good luck! - Does anyone have a way to copy songs from your iPod Touch or iPhone for free? Let us know in the comments below…

    I tried this. I LOVE the program! However, I can’t get the file to autorun. :( The .inf file looks right, the icon loads, even (I did both), but no executing of the program. Any thoughts?

    Hi. I’m not sure what the problem is to be honest.

    1) Make sure you don’t copy the “======” lines into the file.

    2) Perhaps the text has to all be lowercase? Let us know if that works.

    3) I read about the topic on the Microsoft Website here. It doesn’t have much information though…

    Good luck!

    I was unable to get it to work. I tried all variations of lower and upper. If I ever figure it out, i’ll let you know. For now, I’ll just click it. It’s still worth it and at least the icon is cool.

    Hey. Great stuff. My problem is that no events ever show up on my ipod. It “looks” as if all is going well, but the ipod cal is always empty. Should I leave getcal running for a chunk of time, am i missing a step somewhere? Help, please!

  • GravatarEverything iTunes:

    Elaine, it may be that your computer is not allowing autorun files to execute programs? Or maybe it’s your antivirus, otherwise, sorry that i couldn’t help.

    Ryan, all i can think of is that you’re using the wrong calendar address. Try using “.ics” at the end of the calendar url, or try without an extension at all. Good luck.

    Ryan,
    I had the same problem on a new Nano. I had to add an extra / to the end of the private ICL address to get it to work. After that it works great.

  • GravatarRichard:

    Randy, You are a legend, been trying to get this to work and its finally worked. Just add an extra / after the private address and its worked perfectly. Thanks
