Hide “Genre” in iTunes 8 under XP. [solved]

There used to be an option in the Preferences panel to Hide Genre when browsing, which changed the layout of the “browse” (Ctrl+B) panel to just 2 parts - artist and album. Now though, this option has gone, and there seems to be no way to hide the leftmost part - Genre..

If you’re using a Mac, here’s how you fix it.

EDIT: If you’re using Windows, here’s how to do it!

Unlike for audio content editing metadatas in iTunes is very limited for video content. You can’t enter a description nor is any of the information actually saved inside the file itself which makes readding it to a pain. Previously mentioned AtomicParsley solves all these problems, but most people don’t like the idea of editing maybe hundreds of files on the command line. On Macs the problem has been solved by the power tool Lostify, but on windows there are only some very limited guis for AtomicParsley.

With this little script the longdescription field of a selected movie/tv show is set to the description field, so items which have a description will also have the i-button next to it to pop up the description in a new window just like recently bought items have it. This is especially useful if you removed a bought file and readded it or set the description with the previously mentioned metadata-editor atomicparsley using the -desc parameter (Article covering this topic will follow soon).

Let’s face it: Almost nobody bought all their music in the iTunes Store. Whether it’s imported from CDs or bought in another online music store - the non-iTMS-tracks always look a bit different in iTunes: There are no advisory tags and there’s no copyright notice in the “Get Info” window. While the latter isn’t really important to most people advisory tags mixed with non-tagged Tracks might bother the neatly iTunes user.
