Mac OS X only: Shareware application Syncopation keeps your music, podcasts, and video in sync between up to five iTunes libraries. The app finds music that’s in one library but not others, then transfers files between computers until everything matches. Syncopation is smart, too: it automatically replicates changes to a track’s metadata in one library across your others. You can even set up block lists that keep, for example, your thrash metal out of your significant other’s library. Syncopation is $25 for the full version, but you can download a demo version that works with two computers for 30 days—so if you just want to run one quick sync between two libraries, it’s an excellent free solution. Either way, the Mac OS X-only Syncopation is a great tool, though it’d be great to see a completely freeware alternative.

You can save your friends – sorry, YOUR – MP3′s and AAC’s across a local network. This program is written in the java language which is cross platform meaning it can run on any computer which has the java runtime installed. Unfortunately the program is still very buggy in OS X, but the developer is trying to fix this.

Tips for making it work better:

Start iTunes just before starting ourTunes.

In OurTunes, select a download directory. This MUST already exist.

Select the shared library you want from within OurTunes.

It’ll say “creating passthrough thread…” and should then give some information about the library you chose.

Back in iTunes, select the second version of the library. This should have just appeared…

Play a song to download it. You can pause to speed it up.

It helps to fully listen to the first song; “speed downloading” often causes iTunes to disconnect from the share which is an inconvenience.
